Tiempo, ofwel tijd, is een muziekterm die het tempo van een stuk muziek aangeeft. Deze wordt aangegeven door wat men de strong beat of down beat noemt. In Salsa is dat vaak, maar niet altijd, waar de zanger begint met zingen. Voor de danser is het waar men begint met tellen. Dus de down beat is de 1. Tiempo betekent in de telling de 1,3,5,7.
Contratiempo, ofwel tegen de tijd, geeft in muziektermen de weak beat of up beat aan. Hierbij wordt muzikaal het accent op de up beat gelegd en de downbeat wordt onderdrukt. Er wordt een gevoel van anticipatie gecreëerd. Men voelt het accent op een andere plaats dan waar men het verwacht.
Als men Salsa beschrijft als quick quick slow dan betekent dit dat voor de danser de slow wordt benadrukt. In de telling is dit 2,4,6,8 maar de nadruk ligt hierbij op de 4e en de 8e tel.
Gevoelsmatig is dansen a tiempo dat men de muziek aan het achtervolgen is, dan ligt het accent op de eerste quick. Er is dan in ieder geval voor mij een gevoel van haast, je moet op tijd zijn.
Bij Contratiempo ligt het accent op de Slow en dat maakt dat de danser eigenlijk moet onthaasten. Bij beginnende Son dansers is dit heel duidelijk te zien omdat de neiging om terug te vallen in de 1 (of tiempo) maakt dat de bewegingen te snel worden uitgevoerd.
Tiempo / Contratiempo
Tiempo, or time, is a musical term that indicates the tempo of a piece of music. This is indicated by what is called the strong beat or down beat. In Salsa that is often, but not always, where the singer starts singing.
For the dancer, it is where one starts counting. So the down beat is the 1.
Tiempo means the 1,3,5,7 in the count.
Contratiempo, or against time, indicates the weak beat or up beat in music terms. Musically, the emphasis is placed on the up beat and the downbeat is suppressed.
A sense of anticipation is created. One feels the accent in a different place than where one expects it.
If Salsa is described as quick quick slow, it means that for the dancer the slow is emphasized.
In the count this is 2,4,6,8 but the emphasis is on the 4th and 8th beat.
Instinctively, dancing a tiempo is that one is chasing the music, the emphasis is on the first quick. At least for me there is a feeling of haste, you have to be on time.
With Contratiempo, the emphasis is on the Slow and that means that the dancer actually has to slow down. This is very clear in novice Son dancers because the tendency to fall back into the 1 (or tiempo) means that the movements are performed too quickly.
