A new concept of Son
Son Cubano Moderno
A different way to dance

About Son Moderno
Son Cubano Moderno (Son Moderno) is the evolution of traditional Son Cubano music. Like so many other styles of music, Cuban Son has evolved and has therefore always remained relevant. In traditional Son there was an emphasis in the music on telling a story. In the modern version there is more playing with rhythm, different arrangements and instruments. In a certain sense, the evolution in music also forces an evolution in dance. Traditionally, the Son as a dance radiated a form of elegance and courtship. It was a reflection of older dance styles such as Danzon and Contradanza. The new Son music is more romantic and has a different flow. The Son Cubano Moderno as a dance reflects this development.
The basis for Son Cubano Moderno as a dance is of course the traditional Son and all elements can be found in the new development of the Son dance. There are also clear differences. There is less emphasis on the movement of the shoulders (unless this is consciously used to accentuate a moment), and the flow of the dance is less, let’s say, staccato, there is a more continuous movement. The accent of the movement is still the contratiempo (in the count so 4 and 8 or the slow of the quick quick slow) but this is less formal than in the traditional form. This allows the dance to continue to flow to the accents in the music.
Son Cubano Moderno music
While traditional Son is often associated with the dusty, nostalgic streets of old Havana or Santiago de Cuba, the modern Son is much more polished, romantic and incredibly groovy.

Paulo Duarte Pires
With almost 20 years of dance teacher experience, he will help you take the next step. In addition to his own dance school Ritmo Cubano, he has taught Cuban dance styles for several other dance schools. His knowledge has been built up over the years by obtaining several certificates in various dance areas, the last 2 specifically in the field of Son Cubano Moderno. His philosophy is that music guides the way we should dance, as a guideline (what type of music but also how is this music constructed) as well as inspiration for the dance (romantic, energetic). To expand his knowledge, he seeks out teachers, also abroad, who share this philosophy and learns from them.
